I support the WGA strike. Writers deserve a fair contract. Reading the media coverage of the strike, though, I see again how the WGA, and TV/movie writers haven’t made a clear case for what they do. The public has a sense of what directors do. Directors say “action” and “cut.” But the idea of a writer architecting a scene, writing the words that the actors say, that’s a job function that isn’t well understood. And when you’re not well understood, you’re easier to keep down.
